About the Site

Who, what, why, how... when?

I started using the internet in the late 90s, a time when personal websites were more of an art project rather than the carefully curated and perfectly polished websites (which are usually designed to sell something) we have today. While I don't think there's anything specifically wrong with that, I'd been feeling the nostalgic need to build a website just for fun and to indulge in some good old fashioned self-obsession.

You might be wondering why I didn't decide to go all out and make this website LOOK like it came from the late 90s (like many of the absolute masterpieces on Neocities). While I definitely have a fondness for that aesthetic, my intention for this website was to make something just for me. And me wanted this, apparently. I may have replaced blinking gifs, pixel art, and Times New Roman with emoji, anti-aliasing, and Google Fonts, but the spirit is still the same.

This website is here to satisfy my craving to just play around with code, talk endlessly about myself and what I like and dislike, share random crap, and maybe even make some friends with people who are also from and/or appreciators of the late 90s/early 00s web. I recommend reading my web manifesto for more on this.

Want to reach out and say hi? I'd love to hear from you. You can email me at hoidarnielle.me, check out all of my other internet-y things at my landing page, or follow me on Mastodon, which is currently the only social media service I am actively using since Elon ruined Twitter. You can also follow me on Neocities.
